Consequences of New York City Sex Crimes

One potential consequence if you are convicted of a sex crime is Megan’s Law registration. Contact a New York City sex crime attorney for help to avoid the consequences of Megan’s Law.

In New York, the court classifies sex offenders in three risk levels for the purposes of Megan’s Law. Level 1 offenders have a low risk of repeat offense. Level 2 offenders have a moderate risk of repeat offense. Level 3 offenders have a high risk of repeat offense and present a threat to public safety.

The courts also can designate an offender as a sexual predator, a sexually violent offender or a predicate sex offender. All offenders are subject to Megan’s Law registration for life except for Level 1 offenders who have not been designated as a sexual predator, sexually violent offender or predicate sex offender.

The level of notification varies by risk level. The Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) cannot post information about Level 1 offenders and cannot tell a person if a Level 1 offender is living in his or her neighborhood; however, the DCJS can reveal whether a particular person is a registered offender.

The DCJS may publish the zip code in which a Level 2 offender lives and the exact address of a Level 3 offender.
